JAKARTA (Dow Jones)--Crude palm oil prices are unlikely to break through
MYR2,000 a metric ton in the last quarter of this year as the global financial
crisis is likely to depress demand, a senior industry executive said Tuesday.

  "The market will likely find support at MYR1,700-MYR1,800/ton, but it's
unlikely that prices will go higher than MYR2,000/ton for the rest of the
year," said M.R. Chandran, senior group advisor at Platinum Energy, a palm oil
consultancy in Malaysia.

  In recent weeks, rising palm oil stocks due to bumper production in Malaysia
and Indonesia amid lower demand have pressured prices to new lows.

  Palm oil futures prices have fallen nearly 60% from a peak of MYR4,486/ton
reached in March.

  The benchmark December CPO contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives dipped to a
two-year intraday low of MYR1,775/ton Monday as the global financial turmoil
heightened fears of lower demand on slowing global economic growth. At 0825 GMT
Tuesday, the benchmark CPO contract was trading unchanged, at MYR1,820/ton.

  Chandran said depressed global demand could mean vegetable oil consumption
has reached a saturation point.

  Next year, vegetable oil supply is estimated to grow by 6.8 million tons, but
demand is only expected to rise by 6.4 million tons, he said.

  Palm oil companies will have to diversify their operations or risk painting
themselves into a corner amid a bleaker outlook for palm oil prices, he said.

  An estimated 95% of palm oil companies have yet to diversify, which could
include establishing downstream operations such as biodiesel, oleochemical or
food processing plants, any which could help absorb excess palm oil stocks,
Chandran said.

  Palm oil stocks in Malaysia and Indonesia are expected to reach 5 million
tons by the end of this year - the highest on record.
